"[S]heltered gathering places, with colorful, modernistic designs" are an example of planneritis at its worst. Urban planners are always coming up with these designs that usually fail to accomplish whatever vague notion they were created to fulfill. An example are the "wave" bus shelters that are so open they offer no shelter.

I'm not really sure there's much we can or should learn people who came away surprised that the area of Market encompassing SF Centre, the cable car turnaround, and the corridor to Union Square (Powell) had a lot of pedestrians.

Sorry, I am not going to meet anyone on Market Street. To many bums and panhandlers.
I will meet them inside a building or business, such as the restaurant or coffee shop we intend to dine at.
I do not wait for outbound Muni buses west of Third Street. Not worth the trouble.

There are nearly 3 times as many motorists as cyclists using the street so, of course, we are worried about making it tougher for the motorists in order to make it better for the cyclists. That's the San Francisco way.
