As someone who's furnished half her home with stuff I found on the street, I am eager to discover if this Consumerist story is true...

I'll cop -- this was my question! And I'm quite relieved. BUT. For the record, I don't take anything upholstered, or that can't be completely scrubbed down. I don't want any of y'all coming over to my house all worried and disgusted!

@eve I agree. I'm fortunate that for some reason people on my street will often leave behind perfectly serviceable items that are hardly used. I needed a counterspace for my microwave and lo and behold, one was left behind (with tile!). A can of Lysol and a scrubdown later, and it's like new. I even got a recycle bin. Same thing - lysol + bleach = brand new! Someone even left a reel to reel tape recorder out one day!
