SF State Students Brace For Tuition Hike
The California State University system may raise student fees by 10 percent next semester. Chairman Herb Carter told the Chronicle that CSU trustees may go against staff recommendations -- raising fees by 5 percent -- to make sure that tuition won't have to be raised a second time this year.
Last summer the CSU system increased tuition twice in a row (10 percent in May, then 20 percent July) and a lawsuit followed. Donselman vs. CSU is in the works, claiming the school system pulled a "bait-and-switch" on tuition costs.
Trustees will vote on the increase in Long Beach on this Friday, June 18. The 5 percent increase will add over $200 to tuition ($4,230) while the 10 percent increase will add over $400 ($4,429). Just two years ago CSU tuition was only $2,772.
Will that extra couple hundred dollars actually affect students?
Nick Arce, a journalism student at SFSU, says any extra fees hurt.
"A couple hundred bucks, that's books and groceries. These things add up. We're already paying more for less education."
