Yes, that is Puddle of Mudd playing in that video clip As our friends at SFist note, there have been 42 accidents on the...

Crap-ass design. How can 42 accidents each be due to motorist speed? How about suddenly putting up a curve after 70 years without it? How about that curve being a result of CalTrans idiotic failure to repair the bridge 20 years post-Loma Prieta. Caltrans is sued every day because of its flawed design process. Remember the ballot initiative that tried to send state highway contracts out to design firms for competitive bidding?

Kinda like the way no one considered testing the Labor Day bridge-fix for wind. Because, there's never any wind on the Bay.

And I like that my prior post made it to the polling language! Thanks Appeal! You rock.

"How can 42 accidents each be due to motorist speed?"

Because 42 morons were driving at a speed at which they could not control their car around a simple curve.

And seriously, even if the curve was possessed, what the fuck could we do about it? Either the temp span needs to curve into the existing tunnel, or the whole fucker shuts down for two years (conservatively) while we bore through YBI again.

Driving's fucking easy, people. Two rules: Don't hit shit, and don't be in a position to get hit by shit. If people can't figure that out, well, Darwin will be able to personally slap them soon enough.

Plus, if curves are evil and must be done away with, then we can all pretty much kiss Santa Cruz goodbye, because I ain't spending three hours on CA-1 every time I wanna hit up the Red Room.

Those drivers who survive their reckless behavior around the curve should have their licenses suspended until they complete a driver safety class and pay a steep fine... A fine of around $2500 ($10,000 for commercial vehicles) will likely result in the changed behavior that multiple speed limit signs have been unable to prod.

My God, the sheer amount of bullshit elsewhere (SFGate, where they're blaming Obama for this too) on the internet about this subject is really amazing.

TroyMcClureSF is right. If you obey the fucking speed limit ,you shouldn't have a problem. People nowadays think speed limits are only there because The Man wants to oppress them or something and don't realize that hey, they exist because if you don't obey them, you could go get in an accident. There is nothing in the Constitution that says you can drive on the s curve temporary structure on the bay bridge at 100 mph. Or even 75.

More importantly, this is a TEMPORARY measure while they finish the bridge. TEMPORARY. TEMPORARY.

I can't really believe that people are blaming bad driving and accidents on a small "S" curve in the bridge. When I drove that thing daily for five years, I was constantly tailgated and cutoff by morons who were in such a hurry to get somewhere else. Just sitting at the metering lights made me feel like I was playing pole position again at the skating rink as a teenager. The merging of what 15 lanes down to five made it even more exciting! This isn't an effing race people. It's a bridge meant to help you get to the other side. Adding an "S" curve didn't increase the danger of an already terrifying experience. Please.

And as for that truck driver? Dude knew better. Any truck driver worth their salt knows not to exceed speed limits in a vehicle so big and unwieldy, especially on bridges. Damn. Sorry he's dead, but he's the example. Let's follow him. OK?

Slow the eff down, have some compassion for the people around you, and play nice with others. It's not hard.

Sure, the accidents could be avoided if people followed the speed limits - but a significantly large group of folk are not going to follow the speed limit. Which is fine if they're the only ones who would die in fiery crashes. But they're not. They'll also hit and kill folk who are just driving along at a reasonably safe speed.

Put a speed camera there and send $200 tickets to anybody going over the limit, rigorously enforce the speed limit, or redesign the damn thing. Those are the only ways to actually solve the problem. Just saying 'suck it up' is no comfort to somebody whose car was totaled by one of these assholes.
