Yesterday we told you about a former CitiApartments tenant who won her fight to get her deposit back. But her tale did not end...

Funny thing: neither the Chronicle or the SF Gate have had a single article about this. Not one. Ever. There's a class action lawsuit pending against one of the city's largest landlords who's illegally keeping its tenant's security deposits and bouncing checks all around town. Yet the Chronicle whistles happily along its path to the newspaper graveyard.

If anyone wonders the reason why mainstream newspapers are dying and being replaced by sharp, timely, and relevant online newspapers, here's one good example.

Great reporting, Eve, and very good advice about cashing the check at CitiApartments' bank instead of depositing it. Also, instead of getting cash, you can ask that the money be disbursed by CitiApartments' bank in a money order or cashier's check. It will cost a couple bucks, but it will protect you if you get boosted on the 22.

Shouldn't the district attorney get involved if their citizens are receiving bad checks?

Businesses report bounced checks when customers do it, so why not the reverse?

What a horrible scam. Hopefully your story will get propagated on the internet and perspective renters will read before they attempt to rent from CitiApartments.

Brian, good point about the Chronicle not making a peep about this in print or online.

While newspapers twist under the knife of plummeting ad revenue, you have to wonder if Citi Apartments being an ADVERTISER has any effect on its treatment (or, lack thereof) by the Chronicle.

I'm sure they'll insist that their advertising and news staff are completely independent.

And I'm sure I don't believe that.

[SFAppeal: folks are just lobbing this to you-- knock one one out of the park, please?!]

I want to add to this: I went to get my check cashed from their bank and there are a couple of steps you must follow: Firstly, CitiApartment's bank, County Bank, was bought by West America Bank, so while the check is drawn from County Bank, you must cash it at West America Bank's location (inconvenient business hours of 9-4 Monday through Thursday). Also, their tellers are not nice and there is a big sign on the teller windows letting people know that they need a SECONDARY form of ID. My roommate and I needed not only California IDs, but our credit cards (Visa or Mastercard only) as well. Jerks.
