Appealing Events: Alternative Press Expo
One of the largest comic book events is happening this weekend. The Alternative Press Expo won't be as nerdy as Comic-Con, but lots of geeks and industry types will get together to orgy it up.
The special guest line-up is very appealing and includes Phoebe Gloeckner (I remember being weirded out by men's penises in her A Child's Life and Other Stories), Dean Haspiel (I loved the Jonathan Ames collaborated project, The Alcoholic), Jeff Smith (maestro extraordinaire which is Bone) and many others.
There are great programs going on all day long. But this weekend is a cramped one, filled with Vegansaurus' bake sale, Litcrawl, and art gallery block parties. So I have to spend my time wisely and will try not to miss:
Personal Stories (5:00 - 6:00pm) comes straight from the artist's mouth on what it's like to produce such personal work for the masses. Artists include all the favorites such as Phoebe Glockner, Dean Haspiel, Dash Shaw, Jamaica Dyer, and the lesser known, but not inferior Nate Powell, Gene Luen Yang, Shaenon K. Garrity.
Sunday
Live Art Battle (3:15 - 4:15pm) with Jeff Smith and Dean Haspiel dukin' it out!
Indie Survival Guide (4:15 - 5:00pm) addresses how we all struggle day-to-day to be the indie artists we've always wanted to be. Sad clown face.
More programs, such as "Spotlights on ..." can be found here.
Hope to see you there! I'll be the one wearing my very old, very rare Fox Kid's Club Tick shirt.
When: Saturday & Sunday, October 17th & 18th, 11:00 to 7:00 pm.
Where: The Concourse (620 7th Street)
Cost: 1 day $10.00, both days $15.00 (free if you show your 2009 Comic-Con badge)
