As a native and long-time resident, I recently visited with my kids for the first time in 20 years or so. It was a great day-trip featuring a quick, lovely boat ride, an amazing audio tour and a breath-taking view of the City and the bay. If you're tired of jostling with hipsters in the Mission, a day on Alcatraz (now a National Park) may well be refreshing.
