I remember when I was first introduced to Pansy Division back in college. I was like, "THIS EXISTS?!?!"
I'm having trouble thinking of anything else that's even comparable: gay artists that are artists first, gays second. Gays can be so self-ghettoizing -- sometimes it's hard to find us participating in mainstream culture, or even a mainstream subculture, if that makes sense.

Jon talked about that. He said that Pansy Division was originally conceived because there wasn't anything like a "gay punk rock band" at the time. There was a whole scene that did evolve afterward. More recently, Jon said PD has mostly songs which have "cross over" appeal.
