Here's what happens when you look for truth: it's never ending. I find this when I'm writing a screenplay. Because I allow myself the freedom to explore an idea rather than write towards an end. You're always learning new things, and eventually, if you want to finish something, if you want to complete something, you have to just stop and say "Ok. This is as far as this one goes." But you could work on it forever.

So said writer and director Charlie Kaufman when I spoke with him last October (see the complete interview at Life Without Buildings). Kaufman's most recent film, Synecdoche, New York, follows the life of theater director Caden Cotard as he searches for his own truths in an ever-expanding stage production. An infinitely recursive full-scale model of New York City, a suburban home engulfed in flames, and a broom closet in a mysteriously abandoned apartment are just a few of the set pieces in Cotard's life...and his play - both of which are filled with a cast of thousands.

Although unarguably depressing,Synecdoche is an incredibly rich piece of filmmaking that challenges viewers to keep up with its dream-like logic. With his directorial debut, Kaufman has crafted--in the truest sense of the word--a film that rethinks the potential of medium and absolutely requires multiple viewings. Available Tuesday on DVD and Blu-ray, Synecdoche, New York is a must-watch for any Charlie Kaufman fan.View image
