A motorist killed in a crash early Tuesday on Interstate Highway 280 in San Francisco was identified today by the medical examiner's office as 59-year-old Romualdo Hernandez.

Hernandez, a San Francisco resident, was driving his Toyota Tacoma pickup truck north on the highway at about 2:25 a.m. when he ran over a beanbag chair in the fast line near Ocean Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

His truck came to a stop between the fast lane and the No. 2 lane, and Hernandez got out of the vehicle, CHP spokesman Shawn Chase said.

The driver of a second pickup truck, a 41-year-old Daly City man, swerved to avoid a box in the same area, saw Hernandez's truck and slammed on the brakes but couldn't avoid a collision, Chase said. He struck both the truck and Hernandez.

The crash closed the highway's northbound lanes for nearly two hours.
